Join us this October to celebrate our 180th birthday!

The Grainger Market has been at the heart of the community for the last 180 years and thereís never been a better time to celebrate everything thatís great about the Grainger Market and its 100 businesses then this October.

It was in October 1835 that a celebratory meal was held to mark to Grainger Marketís opening.† At the time, its was Europeís biggest market and served as a flesh (or butchersí) market in the alleyways, and as a produce market in the area we now call the Grainger Arcade.† Read more about the Marketís history here.

It also included a number of innovations when it first opened, including fixed and permanent stalls.† It was even know as the Central Market when it first opened, signifying perhaps its cultural location as well as its geographical location.

The Grainger Market today has over 100 mostly small, local businesses.† A book is being published this month by Tyne Bridge Publications (Newcastle Libraries) which focuses on the Grainger Market and the people who work in here today.
